12:15-12:35: Guest Speakers –
Buck Fry with the Idaho State Correctional Center has been revamping their re-entry program. They have partnered with several community partners to work through life skills, employment, and more (including finance) in their re-entry program. In the beginning, CapEd, Economic Opportunity, and ISCC formed a partnership and we developed curriculum for three units: money values/budgeting, credit and debt repayment, and banking basics. Recently, the revamped program won an award, and is seeking to grow, both within ISCC and to other IDOC facilities in Idaho. We’d love to share more about what we are doing with the financial literacy piece of the program, how it is growing/which holes we will be trying to fill in the new year, and the potential vision for the future of the program.
Marci Silva with The Mentoring Network offers school-based mentoring to rural, school referred, and at-risk students grades 1-8, with students having the opportunity to continue the program through high school if they choose. They currently serve five school districts: Nampa, Caldwell, Parma, Homedale, and Vallivue. The mission of the Mentoring Network, Inc. is to provide school-based, direct-to-youth mentoring that will improve life outcomes for vulnerable and disengaged children by developing resilience skills, supporting the development of personal strengths, and increasing self-sufficiency. Recently, graduated students have returned to the MN and expressed a lack of financial literacy education. They are now seeking partners in the community to develop a strategy to help both their mentors and their mentees become more financially savvy and increase their overall financial health.
12:45 -1:00: Member share, questions, and meeting adjournment.
